OVERVIEW
Lip enhancement, or lip filler, has become a very popular treatment lately. It is where a dermal filler, containing hyaluronic acid, is injected carefully into the lip to replace lost volume, or enhance their shape and fullness.
There are lots of people that provide this treatment, but it is important to chose the right practitioner to achieve results that you are happy with, with a procedure that has been carried out safely.
WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT
We would take a full history, including medical, to ensure you are suitable for this procedure, and would go through a thorough consent process.
We would numb the lips with dental blocks (similar to what you would have for a filling) to ensure complete comfort throughout the whole process. We would then enhance the lips beautifully and naturally using a cannula. A cannula is the safest way to inject filler, and we also apply the filler in thin strips which sit nicely within the lip and don’t give a horrible fake appearance. We ensure the lips are soft and smooth and there are no lumps.
QUESTIONS ABOUT
Filler contains hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance found in our skin. Our body breaks this down over time, so the filler is broken down naturally as well. When injected into the skin, it plumps and hydrates, and also helps to replace lost volume and structure which occurs through the normal process of ageing. Some fillers also contain local anaesthetic.
Not when its done by us! If lip filler is just done using numbing cream (which is what most people do), it is very painful. Your lips are very sensitive, and numbing cream is not sufficient. We use dental blocks. There is some initial discomfort as we do some injections in the mouth (similar to when you may have had a filling) but after this you’re completely numb, making the procedure much more comfortable for you.
This procedure does carry risk, especially if its not carried out safely. The biggest risk with filler is injecting into a vessel. Because it is a gel, if this is left in a vessel it can cause it to be blocked, or allow the filler to move around the blood vessels causing blockages elsewhere. If this occurs, the filler needs to be dissolved instantly…and we have the dissolving agent with us at all times. To minimise this risk, we inject our filler using a cannula. This is a blunt syringe, which is inserted through a small entry point into the skin. This is a much safer way of injecting any filler, as opposed to using a needle, and minimises the risk of serious complications.
The results usually last for 6-9 months, although it does vary from one individual to the next.
We would chose the lip filler product depending on the desired outcome. We stock all major brands such as Juvederm, Restylane, Aliaxin…our favourite is Aliaxin LV!
It is not unusual to need several sittings to achieve the desired size of lip. We would only ever do one syringe in 1 sitting, 1ml, and then you can always come back for more. 1ml of lip filler is £250.
