OVERVIEW

DENTAL BRIDGES

A dental bridge is an appliance that is permanently fitted into the mouth to replace a missing tooth or missing teeth.

It is fixed into the mouth by attaching to the tooth/teeth either side of the gap where a tooth has been lost. There are different types of bridges available, and the procedure involved varies depending on the type selected. They are a natural and comfortable option to replace teeth, however, it should be noted that unlike a dental implant, the process usually requires the preparation of other teeth so it can be more destructive, and this in itself carries risks.

QUESTIONS ABOUT

THIS TREATMENT

A dental bridge can vary in length, material and attachment type.

  • Cantilever bridge – this is where a single tooth is replaced using the adjacent tooth as support
  • Conventional bridge – this is where a single tooth, or several teeth, are replaced using the support of teeth either side of the gap
  • Minimal prep (adhesive or Maryland) bridge – this involves very little, or no, preparation of supporting teeth. The bridge is bonded onto the supporting teeth using a wing (often metal)

Bridges can be made from different materials such as porcelain, metal, Emax or Zirconia. All options have their advantages and disadvantages, and these will be discussed with you by the dentist.
